Moderator: Robert Liem, MD
Speaker: Stefan Friedrichsdorf, Medical Director, Dept. of Pain Medicine, Palliative Care & Integrative Medicine, Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota
The management of children with blood disorders and cancer who have refractory pain is challenging and frequently suboptimal. Using common case scenarios, this webinar will address the practical issues that arise from the care of children with debilitating pain complicating cancer diagnoses and blood disorders such as sickle cell disease. Topics will include novel assessment tools, non-pharmacologic strategies for coping, management of neuropathic pain, new drug approaches and use of daily opioids. At the completion of the webinar, participants will be better equipped to understand how to manage pain that is refractory to standard treatment in this population.
- Review the causes of and pathophysiologic processes associated with refractory pain in children with blood disorders and cancer.
- Discuss strategies for evaluating children with pain refractory to standard treatment.
- Identify available treatment strategies for refractory pain, including non-pharmacologic approaches, use of newer pharmacologic agents and incorporation of daily opioids.
