Social Media Ambassador Volunteer Opportunity
ASPHO recognizes that social media is a relevant communication channel for highlighting the Society’s value in the subspecialty by informing and engaging professionals in a manner consistent with the organization’s mission, values, and goals. The organization supports open, transparent, ethical, and accurate communications, and ASPHO Social Media Guidelines are designed to ensure that the social media experience is a welcoming and professional experience for all.
The goal of the Social Media Ambassador (SMA) one year pilot during the 2026-2027 term is to enhance ASPHO’s online presence, audience, and engagement. The intended result is to increase ASPHO’s visibility and social media audiences by strategically engaging volunteers serving as ‘brand ambassadors’ who meet defined criteria and post content aligned with the Society's values and goals.
Volunteer Requirements:
- Current members in good standing
- Active on social media platforms with posts relating to PHO
- Minimum of 500 followers with a significant number interested in PHO

- Comply with ASPHO Social Media Guidelines, including understanding the premise of apparent authority
- Attend volunteer orientation to understand ASPHO’s mission and additional training specific to allowable content
- Meet with subcommittee and staff monthly initially, then quarterly, to assess activity, results, and content, with ongoing email communications. Contribute content and engagement ideas.

- Participate as Ambassador through ASPHO accounts
- Attend ASPHO Conference
- Selected volunteer(s) notify their institutions of the role
Content
Content will be defined as appropriate based on ASPHO Social Media Guidelines and oversight by the Member Engagement Committee and staff liaison. Topics for upcoming posts, and review of past posts, would be reviewed with the social media subcommittee and staff liaison, first monthly and then quarterly, communicating as needed between meetings.
The Ambassador will participate in two types of engagement:
- Response to ASPHO posts - by liking, sharing, commenting, adding a visual element, encouraging colleagues to engage
- Creating original posts - with text, photos, ASPHO digital images, or other visuals, encouraging colleagues to engage. Permitted original posts include content related to ASPHO communications and programs, and approved messaging regarding external news and organizations. Promoting programs of external organizations is not allowed.
Training
In addition to ASPHO volunteer orientation, training specific to the ambassador role would include communicating ASPHO Social Media Guidelines and apparent authority regarding ASPHO’s name, content/post examples, and social media best practices.
Committee Oversight Role
The Member Engagement Committee will oversee the program through regular meetings and email facilitated by staff liaison. The social media subcommittee will initially review content prior to posting. Staff will continually monitor posts and inform the subcommittee and ambassador of potential conflicts. Committee members will also meet with volunteers in person at the conference.
